LPF Series brings UL8750 to LED Drivers

With the ever changing world of light emitting diode (LED) lights, the conditions for power are changing along with them. For years the LPV series by Mean Well has been the standard choice for many LED applications. The most popular of this series was the LPV-60-12 for its UL approvals, size, and power specifications. A 60 watt power supply with a 12 volt output requirement was met with the LPV series.

With the changing of UL approvals from 879 and 1310 to UL8750, Mean Well has had to keep up with the changing agency approval landscape, thus introducing the LPF Series. With UL8750 approval and a dimming option available, the LPF series looks to replace the LPV series. Having the same available wattage and voltage specifications as the LPV series, the LPF series will be able to meet and exceed the demands for all LED applications.

The new UL8750 approval is one that covers all LED standards and references many of the past UL approvals for LED power. UL8750 is an approval that will cover LED equipment that is an integral part of luminaire and other lighting equipment and which operates in the visible light spectrum between 400 - 700 nm. These requirements also cover the component parts of LED equipment, including LED drivers, controllers, arrays, modules, and packages as defined within this standard.

It is safe to say that UL8750 is the approval of all approvals for the LED world. Having this UL8750 approval, the LPF series aims to help the industry become a more standardized and safe environment for all LED products.

Counterfeit UL Mark Warning!

The UL has sent out a public notice, warning that an LED Power Supply, identified as Class 2 waterproof LED power supply, Model KSCFF1002400T1M2, bears a counterfeit UL Mark for the U.S. and Canada. The warning states that this LED Power Supply has not been evaluated by the UL, therefore it is unknown if the LED meets the safety standards of the UL or the safety requirements for the United States or Canada. This product has been sold by Smarts Import & Export Co. Ltd., China, and might have been sold in other areas. The counterfeit UL Mark also includes the following information: Model KSCFF1002400T1M2 Class 2 waterproof LED power supply E216698

Proposed New Mark to Replace C-Tick & A-Tick!

We at Peak to Peak make it our business to keep your business informed, and with technology ever-changing, it's important for regulations to also keep up. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has proposed using the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) as a single mark to replace the C-Tick (used for ITE & radio products) and the A-Tick (used for telephony products). The existing RCM would then cover telecommunications, radio communications, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and electromagnetic energy (EME), effective July 1, 2012. The purpose of the change is to simplify the system for manufacturers, and to reduce costs for manufacturers and regulatory agencies when devices fall into overlapping compliance categories. The change would be a transition over a three year period, to accommodate products already labeled with the C-Tick and A-Tick marks. These products would not be required to be re-labeled. The RCM (shown here) is already a recognized alternative to the C-Tick, as administered by Standards Austrailia. Also, follow this link to see the C-Tick and A-Tick marks, and the popular testing standards listed on the MET labs site. Although the RCM will not be used in New Zealand for telecommunications, due to the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement, The New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development (MED) does support a consolidated mark and has plans for amending it's labeling requirements.

The ACMA is interested in public feedback, as the mark change awaits final approval.

Car Crash Kills Engineering Legend

Car Crash Kills Engineering Legend

On his way home from a memorial service in Saratoga California for his friend and industry comrade, Jim Williams, analog expert Bob Pease was killed in his 1969 Beetle. The roads exiting the venue were deep and curvy. Mr Pease's car missed a turn and crashed off the road. He was killed instantly around 5:45pm on June 18. Mr Pease was 70 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Nancy, sons Benjamin and Jonathan, and three grandchildren.

 

Bob Pease was known as the face of National Semiconductor. He wrote 200 articles known as "Pease Porridge, wrote "Troubleshooting Analog Circuits", won a certificate of merit from the Jesse H Neal Awards Committee of American Business Publications, designed over 20 integrated circuits, and held over 20 patents. Despite his genius, he would spend hours helping a hobbyist and the small customers of National Semiconductor. EDN notes the message we should take away from the loss of Bob Pease is that "we should spend as much time teaching as we do designing and selling chips". His passing notes the passing of a legacy and as a well loved and respected member of the engineering community, he will be missed.

EnergyStar Not Requiring Five Year Warranties for Lighting Power

The rumor that the EPA’s Energy Star certification program for electrical and electronic devices is requiring five year warranties on lighting system power supplies is not true. Instead Energy Star only requires a three year warranty for LED lighting system power supplies. This warranty only covers power supplies that have been found to be defective.

 Warranties for power supplies are not even mentioned in the current standards for commercial LED lighting posted at <a href="http://www.energystar.gov"> Energy Star’s website</a>.

Instead the documents there mention such standards as wattage, light output, power factor, rated lifetime hours, color temperature, power factor and special features.

 Power supply warranties are required by the guidelines for manufacturers of Energy Star certified lighting products posted at the same website. Manufacturers that want to display the Energy Star logo on their products must follow these guidelines or the Energy Star Program Requirements for Solid State Lighting Products Partner Commitments. This means that companies that want the Energy Star logo on LED lighting products will have to offer a limited three year warranty on power supplies.

 Three Year Warranties Required for LED Lighting System Power Supply

Energy Star’s SSL program requirements require a warranty for solid state lighting systems. The requirements state that a three year warranty is required for all Energy Star certified LED commercial lighting system. Power supplies are specifically mentioned as being covered by the warranty.

 The warranty only covers defective products so buyers would have to prove the product is defective to claim the warranty. Wear and tear or damage to LED lighting systems caused by caused by power surges and other outside causes would not be covered by this warranty.

RoHS Recast at a Glance

RoHS Recast at a Glance

 The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) was adopted by the European Union in 2003 and took effect in 2006.  The RoHS restricts the use of six hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated biphenyl ethers) in the manufacture of electronics and electronic equipment (EEE).  Penalties for non-compliance vary by country but can include stiff penalties, goods recall and prison time.   The original cost to implement this directive was $32 billion dollars worldwide, with another $3 billion annually to maintain compliance. 

 In 2008, an assessment by the European Commission showed that up to 44% of EEE checked were not fully compliant.  The National Weights and Laboratories claimed that “99% of products were 99% compliant” (or in other words, only 1% complied fully). 

 So in an attempt to reduce costs, resolve uncertainties and increase enforcement, in 2008 the European Commission announced plans to recast the RoHS Directive.  The intention of the RoHS Recast is not to simply amend the original RoHS; the intention is that it will effectively repeal and replace it.

 So the RoHS recast has been several years in the making.  The consolidated text was adopted on November 24, 2010 but does not become law until the text is approved by the Council of the European Union and published in the Official Journal of the European Union.  

 I know most of you do NOT want to read the entire 46 pages of the RoHS Recast, so here are the major points of interest:

 What’s the Same:

  • - The original six restricted substances and their maximum concentration values allowed (100 ppm by weight of homogeneous material for cadmium, 1000 ppm for all others).  However, Annex II requires a re-evaluation in three years, and several more substances are likely to be restricted at that time.

 What’s Changed:

  • - The scope now includes Category 8 (Medical Devices) and Category 9 (Monitoring and Control Instruments) which were originally exempt. 
  • - The scope also includes a totally new “catch-all” category.  Category 11 EEE (“Other” EEE not covered by any of the other categories) must comply within 8 years. 
  • - There are changes to the exemption process, and these are covered in Annex III, IV, and V.   
  • - Manufactures must not only build compliant products.  They must maintain technical documentation, cite relevant harmonized standards, implement internal production controls, and keep a register of nonconforming products for ten years after the EEE is placed on the market
  • - In the original RoHS, only the manufacturer was responsible for compliance.  The RoHS Recast places obligations on each party in the supply chain including manufacturers, importers, and distributors. 
  • - A CE Mark is required on the finished product.  This visible indicator of compliance makes it possible to stop products at the border.
  • - In addition to the CE Mark, an EC declaration of conformity must accompany the finished product. 
  • - EEE not manufactured in the EU must have an EU importer who shares responsibility with the manufacturer for compliance

With each member of the supply chain now responsible for compliance, it’s more important than ever to work with trustworthy suppliers.  In addition to accepting a “conformity certificate” from your supplier, there needs to be a risk assessment of the quality of that information, and if you buy from an unqualified vendor, you must be prepared to do your own compliance testing.

UL’s Sign Component Manual (SAM)

With the rapid growth of the LED market, UL is updating their Sign Component Manual (SAM) quarterly to keep up with the expansion.

This directory which is governed by UL standard 879 (Electric Sign Components), lists all components currently tested and certified under this standard. UL 879 has replaced UL 48 (Electric Signs) and UL 73 (Motor-Operated Appliances) which was the former guidelines for sign components.

The Sign Component Manual (SAM) contains all of the components associated with construction of electric signs including flexible metal conduit, gaskets and seals & gasket materials, insulating bushings, neon transformers & power supplies, component signs, changing message signs, and sign accessories. Sign accessories encompass many components including LED modules, LED power supplies, construction materials, and LED drivers & controllers.

Any sign manufacturer wanting to streamline their UL approval will pick from components already approved in the SAM. The SAM lists the conditions of acceptability to help the sign designer correctly pick their components.

DR-15 Series 15W Class 2 Din Rail Power

MEAN WELL has announced the introduction of DR-15 series – 12~15W single output class II DIN rail switching power supply for the fast growing demand of DIN rail applications. NID30/60 Series 30W/60W Non-Isolated DC/DC Converter

The majority of DC/DC converter used in the industrial field belongs to “Input / Output isolated” design and MEAN WELL have already introduced enclosed type (15~1000W), PCB type (5~15W), module type (0.5~30W), and on-board type (5~15W) four big families for all kind of applications. In order to fulfill the demand of low cost and size-concerned market, MEAN WELL launched a new style of single output “Input / Output Non-isolated” DC-DC converter ~ NID30(30W) and NID60(60W) series. These regulated converters have standard SIP (Single-In-Line Package) pin configuration and are vertically mounted on the main system PCB, which is complementary to our existing NSD series with horizontally mounted characteristics.

After introducing aluminum casing (CLG family) and fully enclosed plastic casing (PLN, ELN, LP family) LED power supplies, MEAN WELL launched another new product category, open frame type – PLP family, for the “low cost” and “built-in” installation of LED lighting related applications. PLP-30/60 series are 30W/60W switching power supplies with 90~264VAC universal input range. Built-in active PFC function, PF>0.9 & EN61000-3-2 Class C (harmonic current) can be achieved for output loading higher than 75% and hence can fulfill the general requirement for lighting fixtures.

Thanks to the simplified single stage PFC topology, the required high power factor can be achieved economically. PSC-100 Series 100W PCB Type with Additional Charger Channel

MEAN WELL has launched another new economical PCB type switching power supply, PSC-100 series, for the fast growing security industry. Similar to our AD-55 and AD-155 series, beside the main output channel, it also has an additional charger output with smaller power rating to fulfill the special requirement of security, access control, alarm, or battery backup related applications. Compare to AD-55, PSC-100 has 10-times more charging capability that can significantly reduce the charging time for the system. With additional relay contact type alarm signals and 5”x3” miniature design, PSC-100 is very suitable for low cost applications that there’s system cabinet available to assemble the power supply unit.

PLC Series 30~96W Class 2 LED Power Supply

MEAN WELL introduced the new PLC-30/60/100 LED power supply series for the emerging demand of LED lighting / decorative lighting applications. Modified from the existing PLN-30/60/100, the new plastic cases of PLC family are redesigned to change to terminal block style of I/O connection which provides more flexibility to the wiring job. The covers of PLC family also add on two small holes with rubber stoppers that users can adjust the output current or voltage of PLC-30/60/100 easily without removing the covers. Through the potential meters, output current level of PLC family can be adjusted between 75% and 100% (or 75~103%) of rated value while the output voltage can be adjusted between 85% and 100% (or 95~110%) of rated value. PLC-30/60/100 series are also limited power sources complying with UL 1310 class 2 that under any situation the output power will less than 100VA or 5A. This will significantly reduce the hazardous condition exposed to the technicians who execute the construction or maintenance of the LED lighting system.

Thanks to the leading edge ZCS/ZVS technology, the efficiency of PLC family are as high as 89% and hence can operate between -30 ~ +50℃ by only free air convection. SP-240 Series 240W Enclosed Type Power Supply

SPV-1500 Series 1500W High Reliability Single Output Enclosed Type Power Supply

MEAN WELL introduced the new series “SPV-1500”─1500W enclosed type switching power supply equipped with parallel function and programmable output voltage function. By adding 1~6VDC external control, the output voltage of SPV-1500 can be trimmed from 20% to 120% of the rated voltage, which beyond the limits of 70~100% rated voltage of RSP-1500 series. SDR-120 Series 120W High Efficiency Slim Din Rail Power Supply

After launching SDR-240 (240W) and SDR-480 (480W) high performance single output slim DIN rail series, MEAN WELL continues to extend its product coverage to lower wattage applications. For the growing demand of low to medium wattage with high performance and space saving requirements, SDR-120 (120W) series, the AC/DC isolation Class I power units, are formally introduced to the market now.

HLG-240(H) Series 240W High Efficiency LED Power Supply

In response to the demand of LED lighting, architecture decoration, and outdoor lighting, following the successful launch of 18~150W LED power supply, MEAN WELL added two new series ~ HLG-240 and HLG-240H ~ to this high IP level product family in order to fulfill the higher wattage requirements in the market. Built-in active PFC function, HLG-240H series feature with 90~305VAC wide range AC input (90~264VAC for HLG-240). Not only meet the harmonic current limitation per EN61000-3-2 Class C, HLG-240(H) also fulfill PF>0.9 if loading over 65%. PLC-45 Series 45W Class 2 LED Power Supply

After successful launching PLC-30(30W), PLC-60(60W) and PLC-100(96W) series, MEAN WELL added the new PLC-45 (45W) series to this LED power supply family for the emerging demand of LED lighting / decorative lighting applications. Until now, the PLC family designed with plastic cases plus terminal block style of I/O connection is able to offer user different wattage level from 30W to 96W.

Modified from the existing plastic case of PLN-45, the PLC-45 series are designed to have terminal block style of I/O connection instead of wires, which provides more flexibility to the wiring job. Meanwhile, the cover of PLC-45 have two small holes with rubber stoppers on top that users can adjust the output current or voltage easily without removing the covers. In response to the increasing energy price and the global warming problem, LED related application imbued with energy-saving concept is thriving nowadays. With special mechanical design, CEN-100 series can meet IP66 requirement perfectly and save the cost of expensive heat-conducting glue. With 90~295VAC wide range AC input, CEN-100 series can fulfill the usage of 277VAC public power system in North America. Built-in active PFC function, they can meet the norms of harmonic current per EN61000-3-2 Class C, and also meet the requirement of PF>0.9 if loading over 60%. In addition, these power units equip with 4KV surge immunity (EN61000-4-5) which comply with requirements of street lighting applications. HRP-100 Series 100W Miniature High Reliability Enclosed Type

Among MEAN WELL’s new generation power supplies with miniature, high reliability, and low power consumption features, HRP-100 series, 100W AC/DC enclosed type power units with active PFC function have been launched right now. Accompany with the existing products – HRP-75 (75W), HRP-150/ HRPG-150 (150W), HRP-300/ HRPG-300 (300W) and HRP-600/ HRPG-600 (600W), MEAN WELL currently can offer various wattage selections from 75W to 600W for system designers who have low no load power consumption requirement under standby mode. HRP(G) family is the most high-end enclosed type power supplies within MEAN WELL’s product lines so far. Featuring high operating efficiency, miniaturization, and low no-load power consumption (<0.5W), HRP-100 reduce the size by 26.5% comparing to their first generation of PFC model SP-100 (100W) and increase the working efficiency by 4.5~8%. WDR-120 Series 120W Slim Dim Rail Type with Wide Range Single Phase Input

In response to the rapid growing applications as well as the narrower width request of DIN rail power supplies, MEAN WELL introduced a new DIN rail family features with single phase wide input range ~ WDR family. WDR-120 series, 120W AC/DC slim DIN rail power supplies with extreme high efficiency, are firstly launched to the market now. This new series equip with 180 to 550Vac single phase wide input range. They can be used in general power system with single phase 230Vac input or can capture one phase from the 330~550Vac three-phase power system, which can greatly increase the flexibility of system deployment.

With up-to-date circuit design, WDR-120 series possess up to 92% of extreme high efficiency and can provide 120W continuously up to 60℃ by only free air convection, or operate under 70℃ ambient temperature by suitable power derating. The slim design of 40mm in width helps save the precious space on the rail and also makes it 30.58% smaller in size compare to its predecessor model DRH-120 (120W, 340~550Vac/ single phase). With the increasing energy cost and concern of environmental protection, the requirement for energy-saving of energy related products have become much more serious. S-240 Phasing Out

After successfully selling for 14 years, S-240 series (240W) is going to be phased out on 2010/07/01(Begin produce by order with MOQ: 300pcs/lot since 2010/01/01). The successor “SP-240” series, single output enclosed type power supply with built-in active Power Factor Correction (PFC) function, is formally launched to market now. In order to easily make the replacement, this new series is designed to cover both features and dimensions of the old ones. For instance, we keep the same locations of bottom mounting holes and DC fan, but lower 15mm of the height, so that designers can easily use the original mechanism without any changes. In addition, SP-240 series can fill-up the gap of our enclosed type power supplies with PFC function between 200W and 320W, and also allows MEAN WELL to offer users the complete product coverage. Till now, we can offer various options of AC/DC single output product with PFC function to users by wattages of 75W, 100W, 150W, 200W, 240W, 320W, 480W, 500W and 750W.

SP-240 series possess built-in active PFC function which is superior to the passive PFC design of S-240. With full range input from 88 to 264VAC, this series has the same output voltages options (5V/7.5V/12V/15V/24V/30V/48V) as the old one. Featuring up to 89% of operating efficiency, SP-240 has higher efficiency by 1~4% than the corresponding models of its prior generation. SP-240 series also equip with a long life DC fan with fan ON/OFF control circuit that can be operated up to 70℃ambient temperature.

In addition, for the concern of cost advantage, this new power unit is designed with single side PCB instead of double side PCB of S-240. Except for extending its warranty from 2 years to 3 years, SP-240 series has standard functions of adjustable output voltage by internal potential meter, protection for short circuit, overload, over voltage and over temperature. All series comply with international safety standards per UL/CUL/TUV/CB/CE which ensure the worry free operation.
